Liquor board nixed
strip club permit

QUESTION: What happened to the strip bar that was going in where Sizzler used to be on North Nimitz Highway?

ANSWER: The application of Clair's Restaurant & Lounge was denied April 2, said John Rybczyk, liquor control administrator, Honolulu Liquor Commission.

Clair's applied for a dispenser general license, categories 2, 3 and 4, which translate respectively into exotic dancing, live music and hostesses.

Residents and businesses opposed the idea at the 3131 N. Nimitz Highway site.

"We firmly believe that we are being inundated with hostess bars and are especially sensitive about nude entertainment," said Verna Keyes, president, Kalihi-Palama Community Council. "It's about time other communities share in some of the other negative things that they've been accustomed to dumping in our area."

Two neighborhood boards, including Kalihi-Palama, also opposed the strip bar.

"It doesn't fit into the residential character of the neighborhood or the business aspect of the neighborhood," said Grant Tanimoto, chairman, Aliamanu/Salt Lake/Foster Village Neighborhood Board. Michael L. Wilson, general manager, Unicold Corp, 3140 Ualena St., agreed.

"We had experienced vandalism to our building and on numerous occasions people drinking and leaving their empty containers in our parking lot," he said.

"These incidents were due to a nightclub establishment in the Airport Center Building on Ualena Street. Since the closure of this nightclub, we have not experienced as many problems."
