Free program
reads computer aloud

Here's a fast way to: listen to the entire Star-Bulletin, hear how the nasty letter you were about to fire off really sounds or amaze your kids by having the computer read bedtime stories.

The program can be downloaded free from http://www.pixi.com/~reader1, sponsored by the nonprofit organization the Hawaii Education Literacy Project.

The program, ReadToMe, supports both English and Hawaiian language text, allows you to customize pronunciation of mispronounced words, reads text from a Windows clipboard file, from Microsoft Word, text files, or even the Internet.

Sponsors of the home page are looking for sponsors to help with the project, but the reading program for Windows-based machines is free for the downloading. It is similar to the speech programs included in Macintosh computers but will read a Web page on the fly.

A note of correction from last week's column. Maria Hickling, who puts out a Hawaiian music web page, was described as doing all the work for a Hawaiian music broadcast on a public radio station in California. She actually does the news, weather and sports segment.

"Home on the Web" is a weekly Friday feature of the Star-Bulletin.
