Check the names, just in Case

Rep. Ed Case
CLASSIC Case of mistaken identity. An item here about Steve Case, the founder of America Online, the Internet server organization, stated he was the son of "prominent local attorney Ed Case." Wrong! In fact, Ed Case (who is a prominent local attorney and politician) is Steve's cousin and is only a few years older than him. The America Online honcho is actually the son of yet another prominent local attorney, Dan Case. And if you really want to get down to Cases, Dan has another brother, Jim Case, who is also a prominent local attorney and the father of Rep. Ed Case. The latter would like the matter to be cleared up because he has two young sons who are now reading and who think they're his only children - as do his constituents in Manoa - and he'd like to preserve his credibility with all of them ...

SPEAKING of politicians, I found it odd that the only reason Richard Port gave for resigning as head of the Democratic Party was "health problems." My immediate reaction was, "Politicians apparently make him sick!" ...The Arnold Morgado camp is now claiming Mayor Jeremy Harris will resign his office in two years if re-elected, and run for governor. Did anyone else find it amusing that Frank Fasi seemed to echo that charge on TV, especially since he made just such a run from Silly Hall on four occasions ...Then there's the brouhaha at the City Council where the office-switching behavior is reminiscent of grade school with some students complaining they don't want to sit near so-and-so. As Rodney King put it so simply, "Can't we all just get along?" ...

THE front page of Friday's Hilo Tribune Herald contained a large color photo of some Honolulu business people on the Big Isle to look into shopping center development. Prominently featured in the photo was real estate man Joe North, who was attending the session. It would make for a lovely addition to his scrapbook but for one thing - North isn't mentioned in either the caption or accompanying story. Like Rodney Dangerfield... ...

Declining years

THE program for the Kanreki or 60th birthday party of KHON-TV's Jack Kellner stated that the Kaureki signals "the point of decline" in an individual's life. Wife Tommie Kellner, who composed the message, acknowledged that most of Jack's friends feel he's been going downhill for years. Emcee Don Robbs got the roasting of Kellner underway by commenting on the cover of the birthday program, showing Jack in a tux with a drink in his hand. "You can use this for the next party - at Borthwick's or wherever." Judge Bambi Weil, who used to work in broadcasting with Kellner before getting her law degree and moving on to the bench, was saying something nice about the birthday boy when one of his ex-K-POI compatriots, Donn Tyler yelled out, "Objection!" Judge Weil, accustomed to getting her way these days, quickly deflected Tyler with, "Objection overruled." The remarks stood ...

SPORTS fan Jerry Dreiling points out that I referred to the recently married Mike Sherrard as being a New York Giants receiver when in fact the free agent has signed to play with the Denver Broncos this year. Then why, one might ask, did he hold his wedding party at Nicholas Nickolas instead of Nick's Fishmarket, which is owned by his new boss, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen? Nothing like a wide receiver getting off on the wrong foot ...

Dance steps

Rachel Berman Benz
IT'S sometimes OK to watch TV in a dance class, as summer dance students at Iolani discovered when guest speaker Rachel Berman Benz brought along a video performance of the Paul Taylor Dance Company to show them the other day. She spoke to the group before her performance at the Hawaii Theater ...And after Jim Winpenny saw daughter Shannon strut her considerable stuff as the nubile stripper in "Tony n' Tina's Wedding" at Manoa Valley Theater, he had but one comment: "Well, since she stops the show, I'm glad she does so at the end of it." ...
