Sammy Hagar is out and David Lee Roth is back in as lead singer of the rock group Van Halen, Hagar told the San Francisco Chronicle in Monday's editions.

"I was basically fired," Hagar told the paper. "After 11 years of hearing the worst stories in the world about this guy. I turned my back and Edward (Van Halen) and (Roth) are in the studio together."

Apparently a rift started between Hagar and the rest of the band over Hagar's reluctance to record songs for a greatest hits album.

Hagar said the group's manager, Ray Daniels, who is drummer Alex Van Halen's brother-in-law, is throwing lots of money the band's way to get the album recorded.

"Why become a nostalgia act just because KISS is back on the road?" Hagar told the Chronicle.
