Asked how his first day went,

Yesterday was supposed to be transition day for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

Dwight Toyama was to become the HHSAA's first new administrative leader in 18 years. But when when asked last night how his first day went, Toyama said it didn't.

"I don't have a contract," said Toyama, who was informed by newly installed HHSAA president Anthony Ramos, principal of the Kamehameha Schools high school division, that the executive board must further study the matter of his contract. He said he was told he could expect to be under contract by Aug. 1.

The hangup apparently concerns whether or not Toyama's agreed-

upon $65,000 salary encompasses payments for Social Security and for workmen's compensation and disability coverage.

With the automatic expiration yesterday of Ed Kiyuna's one-year term as interim executive director, the HHSAA now has no executive director.

Compounding the problem is the fact that the HHSAA is under orders to move out of Aloha Stadium by July 15.

Though without a contract, Toyama said he will roll up his sleeves after hours from his job as athletic director of Kaimuki High School handle the moving chores himself.

Toyama said Honolulu district superintendent John Sosa came to his rescue in finding temporary space for the HHSAA office at Stevenson Intermediate School.

In the meantime, there is some question as to how much he can legally do to help the HHSAA stay afloat while he continues as a Department of Education employee, awaiting his HHSAA contract.
