Ex-Hawaiian Air hostesses reunite

HAWAIIAN Airlines hostesses from the years 1943-53 have come down to Earth and have organized a social club to keep their friendships flying. The group had a reunion luncheon recently at the Elks Club. Group historian Peaches Riley Smith recalls that on Jan. 8, 1943, Momi Grace Jacobs was the first hostess to be hired. Up to that time, the flight attendants were males. But the boys went off to war and women were hired. They had to be 5-feet-2 to 5-feet-6, 100 to 130 pounds, and had to have Hawaiian blood. Two of the women hired in 1943, Lily May Atcherley and Margaret Waiwaiole Petrie, were at the reunion. Hawaiian graduated a hostess class in 1949. Members included Florence Dang, Juanita Noa, Jewel Wedemeyer, Peggy Nani Todd, Gwen Kamai, Carol Mae Stibbard, Abigail Funn, Aileen Jones, Wattie Mae Hedemann, Clementine "Moki" Lum Ho, Mary Keisel and Alberta Dempster ...
