Coming up

Something's brewing: Sample free 8-ounce cups of Sam Choy's Volcano Roast Coffee from 4 to 7 p.m. today through Friday at Foodland-Ala Moana, Beretania and Market City. The Royal Kona Coffee Corps. (Superior Coffee) will also offer samples 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday at the same locations and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hilo Hattie's.

Aloha Friday Luncheon: The Ilikai/Hotel Nikko's Friday luncheon is sold-out, but it's not too late to make reservations for the next one, coming up June 28. The monthly event features live radio broadcasts from Canoes restaurant, with KCCN hosts Brickwood Galuteria and Keaumiki Akui. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., guests can sample Hawaiian foods, as well as listen to guest entertainers. The cost is $14.95 for adults and $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12. "Popo's Kitchen": Author June Kam Tong will sign copies of her new cookbook at 11 a.m. Sunday at Borders Books and Music, Ward Centre. Free. Then at 1 p.m. chili cook-off champ Bob Wiseman signs copies of his cookbook "Healthy Southwestern Cooking."

Chefs on TV: Kahala Moon chef Kelvin Ro shows up on KITV's "Entrees to Paradise with Pamela Young" at 6 p.m. Saturday, cooking up Grilled Portobello Mushrooms and Vegetables. On June 1, Bruno Chemel of Cliquo serves up Poached Opakapaka.

"Smoke on the Water": Gordon Biersch's monthly series of cigar smoker events continues with this benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a hosted bar with house beer, wine, port, heavy pupu and two cigars. Admission is $60 ($25 tax deductible). Hosted by Spadaro's Sausage Co.


Following are noncredit classes offered by the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Continuing Education and Community Service. Hanatei Bistro Cuisine (S7807): Chef Onjin Kim introduces bistro fare, including charred ahi with lilikoi sauce; baked ono with slow-roasted tomato and fennel with orange rind and ouzo sauce; and prawn ravioli with garlic tomato cognac sauce. One meeting 10 a.m. to noon June 8.

Bone Appetit (S7806): Doctors Alan Titchenal and Joannie Dobbs will share nutrition information on building strong bones as a defense against osteoporosis. They will share tips, techniques and calcium-rich recipes, including those for strawberry muffin shortcakes, orange chocolate brownies and gingered pears and tofu. One meeting 10 a.m. to noon June 15.

Indigo Eurasion Cuisine (S7808): Indigo chef Glenn Chu demonstrates the making of Szechuan eggplant, spiced-rubbed chicken breast with mango salsa and grilled beef strip loin with black bean sauce. One meeting 10 a.m. to noon June 22.

Marvelous Mediterranean (S7811): Chef Chris Hajji demonstrates the making of savory creations with an innovative blend of ingredients and techniques. One meeting 10 a.m. to noon June 29.

Chicken contest

Entries are sought for the 42nd National Chicken Cooking Contest, scheduled for April 4, 1997, in South Carolina. A finalist from each state and the District of Columbia will win a trip to the Cook-Off to complete. Judging is on taste, appearance, simplicity and overall appeal.
