BYUH women in second place
in NAIA tennis

TULSA, Okla. - The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team moved up one spot into second place yesterday at the NAIA national championships as four of five Seasiders advanced to the fifth round in singles.

Meanwhile, the BYUH men's team dropped to third place after jumping to a first-day lead.

For the women, top-seeded Anneli Ornstedt defeated Zebbie Robertson of Bethel (Kan.), 6-1, 6-0, and Marine Francot of Mobile (Ala.), 6-2, 6-1.

Seventh-seeded Theresa Stromberg stopped Wendy Andel of Southern California College, 6-0, 6-0, and Kristina Grunberg of Flagler (Fla.), 6-4, 6-2.

Hawaii Pacific's top women's singles player, Francoise Ramos, was eliminated by BYUH's Shu-Ping Lin, 7-5 (7-4), 6-4.

Lin also beat Monica Yurman of Flagler, 6-0, 6-1.

BYUH's Mimi Liu advanced over Ashley Duke of Birmingham-Southern (Ala.), 6-0, 6-0, and Eva Novotna of Oklahoma City, 6-2, 6-1.

Lin and Lotis Lee Chip Sao won their doubles match.

The only singles loss by a BYUH woman yesterday came when Maylani Ah Hoy fell to Laurence Neuville of Brenau (Ga.), 6-3, 6-3.

Earning two victories apiece for the men were Wei-Yu Su and Matt Griffin.

Su and Tutu Baruah picked up a doubles win, as did Griffin and Danny Auger.

The tournament continues today and concludes Saturday.



SPECIAL OLYMPICS SET

The Hawaii Special Olympics holds its State Summer Games Friday through Sunday at the University of Hawaii.

The program provides year-around sporting and recreational activities for mentally challenged children and adults.

Friday's events include the open swim at 1 p.m. and powerlifting at 3:45 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will kick off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Cooke Field, followed by the 800-meter race, softball throw, running long jump and high jump at 9:30 a.m. Other Saturday events are wheelchair races, the 100-meter walk and shot put.

Various track and field events are featured on Sunday, followed by closing ceremonies featuring entertainment by the stars of Waikiki's "Legends in Concert" show.

GOLF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

The Kapalua Land Co. is offering its annual four-year, $1,000-per-year golf scholarships to Hawaii students.

The following is required of applicants:

Applicants must submit a letter of introduction requesting consideration with their letters of recommendation.
