You Make The Call

Friday, March 29, 1996

"Which team do you pick to win the NCAA Division I men's college basketball championship and why?"

Some responses to last night's call-in question:

Kenny Nicholas, Kuhio Park Terrace: "Kentucky has too much depth. The Wildcats will be running loose all the way to the championship."

Bill Fuson, Honolulu: "When you play Kentucky, it's like playing two teams. They pressure teams all game long until they get tired, and then they bury 'em. They should win big. But remember Phi Slamma Jamma and North Carolina State. So watch out for Mississippi State."

Richard Block, Aina Haina: "The Syracuse Orangemen have been underdogs through the whole tournament, but their 2-3 zone has proven difficult for every team they've played. And if needed, John Wallace can carry the team."

Patrick Evans, Kalihi: "The Kentucky Wildcats have 11 McDonald's all-stars on their team, and no team in the Final Four can handle their "40 minutes of hell" full-court pressure. A loss for the Wildcats will be a big disappointment."

Travis Yoshinaga, Manoa: "UMass will win because they've got Camby, a great backcourt, and will control the tempo of Kentucky's game."

Ata Davis, Kaneohe: "Mississippi State can take it all. Instead of being a fast-food cook, Dontae Jones should be called the second microwave. Kentucky and UMass go down!"

Moses Kaleopaa, Waikiki: "Throughout the regular season, Mississippi State kicked everybody's butt, and they're going to kick Syracuse's butt and win the whole thing."

Fred Tam, Chinatown: "Syracuse Orangemen. Why? Because I have $50 on them. And the Stanford girls, too."

Fred Kind, Diamond Head: "Syracuse will win. It's a well-coached team."

Robert Hose Jr., Pearl City: "Kentucky. Great offense, great defense, and most of all a great coach, Rick Pitino."

Darryl Onaga, Manoa: "Kentucky. Pitino's defense is college basketball at its best."

Darrell Bactad, Hawaii Kai: "Mississippi State will win it all. Dontae Jones will lead the Bulldogs to the promised land. Kentucky will beat UMass. Mississippi State already beat Kentucky. Add it all up - go with the underdogs."

Chris Montri, McCully: "Kentucky's defense is too strong for the other three teams. And their second team is just as good as their first team - probably the No. 2 team in the nation."
