Becker gets sporty in Big D and Chicago
I knew Becker Communications owner
Ruth Ann Becker had sports contacts, but little did I know she was a sports fan. She just returned from a trip to Chicago and Dallas and reports that "great cuisine" (she digs good food) and "exciting sports" are alive and well in both cities. In Dallas, she was in the stands when
June Jones coached the SMU Mustangs to a 47-36 victory over Texas State in the former Hawaii coach's first home game as Mustangs head coach. "Big D is crazy for Jones," Ruth Ann says, "with billboards declaring 'June Jones Cometh' sprouting along freeways." Ruth Ann adds that her favorite billboard plug for Jones is: "His Run 'N Shoot Is Locked and Loaded." She said that the city also loves Mayor
Tom Leppert. He was once a Campbell Estate trustee, vice-chairman of Pacific Century Corp. and CEO of Castle & Cooke Hawaii. In Chicago, with
Emi Anamizu, ceo of Honolulu's Core Group One, and part-time Honolululans
Mark and
Mirella Monoscalco, Ruth Ann went to a Cubs baseball game, rooted for the home team and downed bratwurst and Old Style beer ...
...CUPID STRIKES: Candes Meijide Gentry was at Escada the other day talking with store g.m. Mariese Montano-Smith about her upcoming wedding to chef Milan Drager. The wedding will be on Lanai Nov. 15 with her family and a small number of friends attending. An engagement reception, with an Italian circus theme, will be held Nov. 8 at La Pietra. Candes, Miss Hawaii 1999, said Nov. 15 is the same day as the Opera Ball, so many guests will be in formal attire and then be off to the ball following the garden party. Her lucky guy is originally from Germany and was sous chef at the Kahala Mandarin under chef Wayne Hirabayashi. Milan is now food and beverage director at the Mandarin in San Francisco. He will leave that position to live here. Candes said Cupid's arrow hit her in the heart when she took Milan's cooking class more than three years ago. Soon after that, when the 6-foot-3 Milan was cooking for a Hawaii Theatre gala, Candes drew herself up to her full 5-foot-2 height and "marched right into the kitchen to say hello," she said. That led to them going hiking in Kuliouou Valley. Three years later this June, when they went on the same hike, he dropped to his knee and proposed. He had asked Candes' mom, Nora Meijide Gentry, for her blessing earlier. That was wise ...
...Ruth Lin has returned from New York, where she attended the second wedding reception for her daughter, Deborah Lin, and "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini. Ruth brought leis for the wedding party and Hershey's Kisses-shaped macadamia-nut chocolates for all the guests, and danced hula. It was held in the top two floors of a banquet facility with a view of the city. She said most of the show's cast was in the crowd of 250. The couple were married at Central Union Church on Aug. 30 and a reception followed at the Kahala ...
