Japanese runners sweep on Maui

Junichi Kawabata ran the Maui Marathon in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 24 seconds yesterday to beat his nearest competitor by more than 13 minutes.

Clement Simon of France finished second in 2:50:05 and Yoshiaki Mikami of Japan took third in 2:52:47. Paul Hopwood of Kihei was the first Hawaii finisher with a time of 2:56:43.

Youko Yamazawa of Japan won the women's race in 3:09:40 over Sharon Moran of Honolulu (3:25:37) and Chiharu Mikami (3:26:09) of Japan.

Vulcans get by Sea Warriors in soccer

Adele Letro beat Chelsie Sato for a goal in overtime as the UH-Hilo women's soccer team edged Hawaii Pacific 3-2 yesterday in Keaau.

It was Letro's second goal of the match. HPU's Ashley Dolan scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to send the game into overtime.

The Vulcans improved to 2-3, and the Sea Warriors dropped to 2-4.

» Marissa Minor had six saves, but Chaminade was shut out by Academy of Art 2-0 yesterday.

The Silverswords (1-2) were without forward Jamie Lindstrom because of an injury. Olivia Dupon and Morgan LeFever scored the goals for the Urban Knights (1-4-1), who won for the first time.
