Red-hot Farrington hammers McKinley
OIA Red East » Fifth-ranked Farrington showed it can beat teams at all aspects of the game.
Apelu Sooalu rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns; Drake Miller returned a kickoff 83 yards for a score; and the Governors defense allowed two first downs and 36 total yards in a 36-0 victory over McKinley last night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
Miller also caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dayton Kealoha and the Governors (4-1, 3-0 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East) blocked a punt for a safety as they excelled in all phases of the game.
"It was a total team win," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "I was happy with every phase -- offense, defense, special teams."
It was hard to tell which phase the Governors excelled at most. The offense racked up 368 yards and, after a slow start, scored on four of six possessions. Special teams was responsible for 12 points, including a safety and a field goal, but the defense may have been tops, completely shutting down McKinley (1-3, 1-1).
Things were so bad for the Tigers that they finished the first half without a first down and just 3 yards of total offense.
"The defense is playing well," Okimoto said. "They're playing with some confidence, but I don't want them to get overconfident. We still have a lot of work to do."
McKinley's defense kept the game close early, but a slew of mistakes late in the first half doomed the Tigers.
After Sooalu booted a 29-yard field goal to give Farrington a 3-0 lead, the Governors wound up scoring 14 points over the final 3 minutes of the first half.
Miller made a leaping two-handed catch while falling into the end zone for a 9-point lead, and the Governors took advantage of a fumbled snap on a punt to increase their lead.
Sooalu plowed into the end zone from 10 yards out for the first of his two touchdowns and Alvin Faamasili blocked a punt for a safety on McKinley's next possession to give the Tigers a 17-0 halftime lead.
Miller returned the second-half kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and Sooalu capped Farrington's next drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach.
"Our offense stepped up big time, our defense was tough and our special teams was strong," Sooalu said. "We just come out and do our thing and be humble."
Kealoha finished 10-for-15 for 133 yards passing for the Govs and Ani Isumu led the receiver corps with five catches for 65 yards.
