Kaimuki gives Johnson victory over Kailua
If this one was any different for Darren Johnson, he wasn't admitting as much.
Johnson's Kaimuki Bulldogs were winners over the Kailua Surfriders, his former team, 21-14 in soggy conditions last night at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
On Kaimuki's homecoming night, the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East) got superb performances from versatile receiver/defensive back Andrew Save (two interceptions, 75-yard kickoff return for touchdown) and running back Tevita Aholelei (97 yards on the ground).
"Anybody we play, we're coming in to try to win, and we're gonna play hard and gonna get our kids after it," said Johnson, who coached the Surfriders for eight seasons up until 2004. "It's another game for us, it's a victory, and it gets us back on the winning track. That's what we needed - we lost two close ones, and we were in another close one (tonight)."
Save, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound junior who never leaves the field for the Bulldogs (he plays offense, defense and special teams) was key in holding the Surfriders offense at bay for three quarters.
Kailua (0-4, 0-3 OIA Red) suffered another close loss after back-to-back 1-point defeats at the hands of Damien and McKinley.
Surfriders quarterback Bob Lastimosa regained his composure after throwing the last of his three interceptions, tossing a 15-yard dart up the middle to Bubba Sato to knot things up at 7 with 10 minutes left in the game.
But Save wasn't done leaving an impact on the game yet. He snagged the kickoff, weaved through some traffic and sprinted up the right sideline 75 yards to put the Bulldogs back on top.
"A lot of times in high school, momentum is huge, and we had gotten the momentum with our score," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "It looked like things were coming our way, and that kickoff return just swung it completely the other way and we were never able to recover. That's all-star level talent right there."
"I was just trying to create my own hole," Save said of the play. He had a touchdown return in the first half called back due to a holding call.
After Lastimosa hit Adam Trueman for a 10-yard score to tie the game back up at 14 with 7 minutes left, Kaimuki turned to Aholelei to make things right. The senior burst through the middle on the first play from scrimmage for 37 yards, and eventually plunged through with the game-winning score from the 1.
The reins of the Kailua football program changed hands in 2004 when Johnson resigned and Rosolowich took over. Johnson resurfaced as a coach last season with Kaimuki, leading the Bulldogs to the Division II state semifinals.
