Soldier indicted in attack on wife
A 35-year-old Schofield Barracks soldier was indicted by an Oahu grand jury yesterday on an attempted-murder charge of using a hammer to bludgeon his wife, who remains in critical condition.
A city prosecutor said it is uncertain whether the wife will survive.
Sgt. 1st Class Lincoln Phillips is accused of trying to murder his 36-year-old wife, Tara, early in the morning of Sept. 3 at their Ewa Beach townhouse.
Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp told Circuit Judge Derrick Chan that the wife suffered massive brain injuries, while the couple's two teenage boys were asleep during the incident.
Chan granted Kapp's request to increase Phillips' bail to $500,000 from $350,000.
The attempted-murder charge carries a mandatory life term with parole.
Destructive mites found in Hilo
HILO » State agricultural workers near Hilo Airport have found more tiny varroa mites that attack honeybees, but they remain hopeful the infestation can be wiped out, they said.
The latest find over the weekend was just four of the destructive mites, found by trapping and inspecting 2,930 bees. Forty-three mites have been found among 3,000 wild bees along a 2-mile stretch of coast near the airport. The first ones were found during "surveillance trapping" of wild bees on Aug. 22.
No mites have been found in hives managed by beekeepers.
"We are still optimistic that we can eradicate bee mites from Hawaii Island," said Neil Reimer, manager of the state Plant Pest Control Branch.
The small number of mites found and the fact that they are all in a relatively small area suggest that agricultural officials caught the infestation early, Reimer said.
Hives found with mites are destroyed by the state Department of Health Vector Control Branch. Additional assistance is being given by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state officials said.
State agriculture officials are asking Hilo residents to report wild hives and swarms to the Pest Hotline at 643-7378.
The officials are also asking professional beekeepers not to move hives in or out of a 15-mile radius around Hilo Bay.

Grants to upgrade Hilo Airport
HILO » Two federal grants totaling nearly $11.5 million will be used to make upgrades at Hilo Airport, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono said.
Inouye announced nearly $9.1 million to expand the aircraft cargo apron and related taxiways.
The money is needed because of increasing air cargo traffic at the airport, Inouye said.
Hirono announced nearly $2.4 million, 90 percent of which will go to improve the terminal's air-conditioning system. The remainder will be used to construct a new ramp and taxiway at the airport, she said.
