Wie headed to Q-school
Michelle Wie will compete in the first round of the LPGA's qualifying school next week in California to try to earn playing privileges on the top women's golf circuit.
Wie, an 18-year-old from Honolulu who turned pro in 2005, failed to earn enough money this year competing in seven LPGA events to gain full-time playing status. Her $62,763 total ranks 116th on the money list. The top 80 players earn playing privileges for 2009.
Jill Smoller, a spokeswoman for the William Morris Agency, confirmed Wie's entry in an e-mail. The Associated Press first reported her plans.
In addition to playing part-time on the LPGA tour, Wie has missed the 36-hole cut in eight men's golf events she has entered.
UH soccer ties New Mexico in OT
Hawaii finished up the New Mexico Classic with a 3-3 women's soccer tie against the host Lobos last night in Albuquerque.
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 3-1 lead before New Mexico came back to tie to force overtime. Neither team scored in two 10-minute sudden-death periods.
Kristyn Shapka and Ambree Ako scored for Hawaii in the first half and Taryn Fukuroku added a goal in the second half.
Lynch and Castillo tied in Princeville
John Lynch and Ron Castillo Jr. are tied for the lead at 10-under 134 after two rounds of the Aloha PGA Professional Championship and Stroke Play Championship at Princeville Golf Club's Makai Course.
Castillo shot a a 6-under 66 yesterday and Lynch, who was tied after one round on Monday, had another 5-under 67 yesterday.
Andrew Feldmann and John Hearn are five shots back.
Bruce Irons advances at Trestles
Hawaii's Bruce Irons defeated Aritz Aranburu 16.34 to 11.77 yesterday in the second round of the Boost Mobile Pro surf contest at Trestles in San Onofre, Calif.
Irons moved on to the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event with the win. Hawaii's Sunny Garcia and Roy Powers are also in the third round, having won first-round heats on Monday.
Hawaii's Andy Irons, Fred Patacchia and Pancho Sullivan lost their second-round heats and were eliminated from the contest yesterday.

Hawaii-Hilo ranked in West Region
Hawaii-Hilo, off to a 3-1 start, is ranked seventh in the NSCAA/adidas West Region men's soccer poll.
Following a season-opening loss to UC San Diego, the Vulcans have wins over San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona and Academy of the Arts.
» Hawaii Pacific is No. 6 in the USTFCCCA West Region men's cross country rankings, which were released yesterday.
The Sea Warriors are coming off a first-place finish at the Chaminade Invitational, where HPU's Andreas Schwab took top individual honors.
Hawaii Pacific was not ranked in the USTFCCCA preseason poll.
