While stand-up comedy isn't a new use for the Kakaako nightclub space, the new weekly showcase is an ambitious effort by promoter On Stage Hawaii to bring quality mainland names to the islands on a regular basis. The recent addition of local opening acts also means more opportunities for developing comics to perform in front of bigger audiences.
Wednesday Night Comedy kicks off next week with Tommy Davidson, best known for his roles on the '90s variety show "In Living Color."
When the program went off the air, he moved on to the big screen with roles in "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," "Booty Call" and "Juwanna Mann." More recently, Davidson's voice was featured in the animated series "The Proud Family" and he guest-starred in episodes of Chris Rock's "Everybody Hates Chris" and the late Bernie Mac's "The Bernie Mac Show."

According to an August interview with the Dayton Daily News, Davidson has two more movies on the way: "Chicago Pulaski Jones," directed by Cedric the Entertainer and co-written by Kel Mitchell, and "Black Dynamite," co-starring Michael Jai White and Arsenio Hall.
Timmy Mattos is scheduled to open Sept. 10.
The following week, two-time "Last Comic Standing" finalist Alonzo Bodden returns to Honolulu. He was last here in 2006 to co-headline a Fourth of July block party at Pearl Harbor alongside Jay Mohr and Bert Kreischer. Like Davidson and countless other stand-up comics, Bodden has attempted to make the crossover from stage to screen. After winning "Last Comic Standing" in 2004, he released a comedy DVD and appeared in the films "Scary Movie 4" and "Totally Baked: A Pot-U-Mentary."

On Sept. 24, Tennessee-born Henry Cho brings his squeaky-clean brand of humor to the islands. With more than 20 years of stand-up experience, the veteran funny guy employs a finely tuned set based on his experiences growing up in the South, without resorting to curse words or dirty jokes.
Shawn Felipe and Jose Figueras will open for Bodden and Cho, respectively; fellow Hawaii-based comedian Augie Tulba will host all Wednesday Night Comedy shows in September.
In addition to general admission seating, VIP accommodations are available and include special reserved seats and a preshow pupu buffet.
