Water-saving gardening taught
Help conserve water and reduce your water bills by building a rain barrel catchment system with a little help from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden, who are hosting a class Sept. 13.
The 10 a.m.-to-noon workshop will teach participants how to reduce the amount of potable or drinking water used for nonpotable activities such as landscape irrigation.
Cost is $35 and includes a pre-drilled, 55-gallon catchment barrel and hose bib, so be sure you can transport it home.
Hurry, the first 10 who register will get a $15 discount.
Advanced registration is required at 748-5363 or visit www.boardofwatersupply.com.
Botanist offers seminar on plants
Kahuku Public and School Library will be hosting "Be an Angel with Plants," a free seminar conducted Sept. 30 by Angel Ramos.
Known for his green thumb, Ramos is a noted "Hawaiian National Treasure" and gardener who was a botanist for the Kahuku Sugar Mill Plantation.
The one-hour session, held at the library conference room, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Ramos plans to cover cultivation of flowers and plants, how to select drought-resistant specimens and which plants grow best in your area, as well as care and maintenance for a healthier, hardy garden.
The library is located at 56-490 Kamehameha Highway.
