Seasiders swept by NAIA power
Senior middle blocker Faylynn Merrick sat out with an injury and the Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team fell to California Baptist 25-12, 25-12, 25-21 last night at the Hawaiian Invitational Tournament at Laie.
The Lancers, one of the top teams in the NAIA, received 17 kills from Fei Shi to improve to 7-0.
The Seasiders came back to sweep Embry Riddle 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 in the final game of the tournament behind Keisha Moeia's 12 kills and LeeAnn Mapu's 31 assists. BYUH improved to 2-2.
Chow defeats sister for trials title
Honolulu's Chrissy Chow defeated her sister Mindy in the final of the 52kg division yesterday at the USA Judo Junior World Championship Team Trials in Spokane, Wash.
Chrissy Chow, who fights out of Hawaii Tenri, will represent the U.S. at the Junior Worlds, Oct. 23-25, in Bangkok, Thailand. The sisters both won bronze medals at last April's U.S. senior nationals.
BYUH volleyball wins in 3
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team finished the weekend with a 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the Hawaiian Invitational Tournament.
The weekend included two wins and two losses for the Seasiders.
Keisha Moeai led the Seasiders with 12 kills as BYUH outhit the Eagles .291 to .020.
Hawaii-Hilo downs CSU Bernardino
Hawaii-Hilo scored two early goals en route to a 3-1 win over host CSU San Bernardino in men's soccer yesterday. Drew Geis led the Vulcans with a goal from 18 yards out and one assist.
» The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's soccer team failed to score despite six shots, falling to Texas-Permian Basin 2-0. UTPB outshot the Seasiders 15-6.
» Chaminade scored the first goal, but failed to score again, losing 6-1 to the Sonoma State in men's soccer.
The Seawolves tallied three goals to finish the half and take advantage of the game. They outshot the Silverswords 27-4.
» Washburn University's Danielle Ayala kicked in the winning goal in the 88th minute as the Lady Blues overcame Hawaii Pacific 2-1.
Washburn outshot the Sea Warriors 15-3. HPUs Veronica Ellman finished with six saves.
» Texas-Permian Basin beat Chaminade 3-1, led by Brandy Watts' two goals.
» Sonoma State toppled the Brigham Young-Hawaii women 4-1 yesterday.
Trailing 3-0, Kahanu Ah Puck scored the Seasiders' lone goal in the 88th minute.
Alexica Bosque led the Seawolves with two goals.
