Te'o helps No. 1 Punahou pull away
In the fierce, enemy territory of a Castle, Punahou turned to Manti Te'o to turn the tide.
Te'o picked off a pass and returned it 46 yards for a crucial third-quarter touchdown as No. 1 Punahou pulled away for a 41-14 win over the Knights on a soggy, humid night.
The Buffanblu were ahead just 13-7 moments into the second half when Te'o, who vicariously studies opponent video, read a short pass by Castle's Blake Rapozo and blazed up the right sideline, shaking off Rapozo along the way.
"That was a game changer. We got back the momentum," said senior Kimo Makaula, who had an unearthly night of his own. The defensive end stepped in when starting quarterback Cayman Shutter went down with a shoulder injury during Punahou's opening series.
Shutter sat out the rest of the game, his right arm in a sling as a precaution. Makaula threw for 147 yards on 11-of-20 passing with no interceptions. He threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Robby Toma on his first drive and had only one fumble.
"I'm very, very proud of Kimo," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. "Despite Cayman getting hurt, Kimo came in and was a clutch player. He didn't get rattled."
Castle's all-angles blitz package led to four sacks, including two by speedy Kawehi Sablan. However, Punahou's defense limited the Knights to 165 total yards, and also came up with four interceptions.
Shutter isn't sure if he'll be healthy enough to play when the Buffanblu travel to Seattle to play in the Emerald City Classic against Kitsap.
"The main thing is the regular season. It sucks that I couldn't play, but Kimo stepped it up," he said.
Te'o, the most widely recruited linebacker in the nation, saw his team get rattled midway through the game as both teams exchanged verbal pleasantries.
"It almost affected me," the 6-2, 233-pound linebacker said. "It tried to stay level-headed, but it's difficult. Kimo did a great job after our brother, Cayman, got hurt."
After taking a 19-7 lead, Punahou got a big boost from Dalton Hilliard. The senior running back broke off touchdown runs of 15 and 30 yards out of the I-slot set, and a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore K.T. Tu'umalo broke the game open.
