3 teens arrested in shooting
Police arrested three teenage brothers and were looking for two more people in connection with a home-invasion robbery and shooting in Aliamanu where a 19-year-old was critically wounded.
The three suspects, ages 19, 17 and 16, were arrested at a Salt Lake Boulevard home at about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree robbery.
Police said that on Aug. 11, five masked men entered a home at 1256 Hulakui Drive in Aliamanu. All five appeared to be armed with handguns. Timothy Lapitan was shot during a struggle, police said.
The intruders took electronics and other items before fleeing on foot. Two women, ages 56 and 60, were home at the time.
Police homicide Lt. Bill Kato said it has not yet been determined who fired the shot, and that charges are still pending as the investigation continues. More suspects could be arrested.
"That's still open to investigation and is depending on what they have to tell us," Kato said.
Police are still trying to determine a motive for the case. Lapitan is still hospitalized but is no longer in critical condition, police said.
The oldest suspect has a criminal history. On June 10 he was convicted of having liquor in a public place as a petty misdemeanor and promoting a detrimental drug. He was sentenced to six months' probation.
