The Dragon Boat Salad crew and the Arizona Gila Dragons pulled away from the shore to race on Saturday during the 12th Annual Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival held over the weekend at Ala Moana Beach Park. Dragon boat races, or "tuen ng," have been held for over 2,000 years in China in honor of Qu Yuan, a poet-statesman who committed suicide in the Miluo River after being exiled as a show of loyalty to the state. Festival rituals, such as throwing rice dumplings, drum beating and the use of paddles, is accredited to the tactics the local fishermen used to distract the man-eating fish from Qu Yuan as they tried to save him.
