Bone marrow drive aims to aid student
Friends of leukemia patient Leilani Emosi have joined with the Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry to host a bone marrow registration from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Kapolei Shopping Center.
Emosi, 19, an Ewa Beach resident and Leeward Community College student, was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. It's the third time Emosi has faced the disease -- she's been battling leukemia since age 8.
Friends of Sweet Leilani hopes to find a donor for her or the 6,000 others on the waiting list nationwide. The challenge is especially great to find a match for those of mixed ethnic backgrounds such as Emosi, who is Samoan, Caucasian and African-American.
Donations to help Emosi's family with her medical treatment (payable to Save-a-Life-Enhance-a-Life Foundation) may be sent to Friends of Sweet Leilani, 590 Farrington Highway No. 524, P.O. Box 176, Kapolei 96707.
Another bone marrow registration drive will be held at a fundraiser for Emosi, 2 to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Pipeline Cafe. The event will feature 7 Simple Pieces, the Gregg Hammer Band, Touch of Gold, Hulili and Pegasis.
Food, children's activities and a silent auction are included. Tickets are $25. Call 349-1459 or visit www.SweetLeilani.org.
