Punahou tops Waianae
Of all the questions surrounding No. 1-ranked Punahou, none was more prominent than the one concerning the offensive line.
The Buffanblu, of course, had no doubts. With a 37-21 win over Waianae yesterday, it's hard to argue with the results.
Cayman Shutter threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns as Punahou's air attack picked up where it left off last year. Shutter was sacked only twice while completing 16 of his 23 pass attempts, but grimaced about throwing two picks.
"I was too greedy," Shutter said. "I thought I could move (Waianae's defense) with my eyes. We had so many guys open, but they made great adjustments."
Robby Toma hauled in nine of those passes for 134 yards, including several spectacular, leaping grabs in tight coverage. That gave a crowd of about 1,500 at sunny Alexander Field plenty to cheer about.
As for the offensive line, there's room for improvement, the coaches say.
"Our goal is zero sacks and 100 yards rushing," offensive line coach Jonah Ka'akua said.
Punahou ran the ball 28 times for just 23 yards against an aggressive Seariders defense. Dalton Hilliard tallied 55 yards on 12 carries.
"The receivers weren't blocking too well when Dalton was breaking it," Toma said. "It was always one of the guys we're blocking who was making the tackle."
The Buffanblu did enough through the passing game despite a tenacious rush from Waianae tackles Wade Keliikipi and Elijah Talbert.
"They were very good inside, but our line handled themselves pretty well," said Chad Nishikawa, another O-line coach.
Punahou amassed 312 total yards out of its pistol, shotgun and I-slot sets.
The Buffanblu defense, led by linebacker Manti Te'o, permitted 122 rushing yards on 32 attempts by the visitors. They sacked Waianae passers six times.
"It was good to get out here and hit somebody who can get right back up," Te'o said.
Seariders senior Danny Kekoanui ran for 82 yards on 10 attempts and caught five passes for 55 yards. Converted defensive lineman Eleu Wilson, a 290-pound junior, had 38 yards on nine carries.
Punahou raced to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter and was never threatened.
Stabren Caires returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to paydirt, and Shutter hit Toma for a 33-yard scoring play -- despite a tip by Waianae defensive back Charles Inferrera -- to give the Buffanblu a 13-0 lead with 8:52 left in the quarter.
With its third series, Punahou covered 28 yards in six plays. Shutter found Galen Arakawa on an out pattern in the end zone for a 14-yard toss. Hilliard scored on a toss sweep for a 2-point conversion and Punahou had a 21-0 lead with 4:54 to go in the first quarter.
The Seariders used Wilson as a battering ram up the middle to set up Kekoanui's 56-yard jaunt up the right sideline for their first score with 3:17 remaining in the first.
"He helps me out a lot. He's a good blocking fullback," Kekoanui said. "A good decoy."
