Kamehameha trips Kapolei
For much of a windy, wet night, a Hurricane grounded the Warrior Air Express.
By the end of the third quarter, however, quarterback Edmund Kamano Jr. and the fourth-ranked Kamehameha Warriors were back in flight en route to a 26-18 win over No. 5 Kapolei last night.
A stout Hurricanes defense led by Chad Lopati shut down Kamehameha in the first half. However, Lopati suffered a knee injury after being chopped in the backfield during a scramble by Kamano in the first quarter.
"You know what, that really deflated us," coach Darren Hernandez said. "He's our best defensive player. I cannot believe that happened. I've never seen anything like that before."
The play resulted in an illegal block penalty against Kamehameha, but left Kapolei climbing uphill despite holding the lead for nearly three quarters.
"I love David Stant. I know he never teaches boys to do that," Hernandez said of his counterpart.
For Kamehameha, it was another huge win following last week's 35-0 shellacking of Kahuku. Kamano completed 15 of 35 passes for 183 yards, but threw only one pick, and his scrambling wore out just about everybody in a teal Hurricanes jersey.
Ryan Ho ran for 124 yards on 18 carries to spark Kamehameha's offense.
A number of early Kapolei drives ended fruitlessly inside the Kapolei 20-yard line.
"Last year, we'd get in the red zone and not score," Stant said.
Kamano was relieved after a long night of facing Kapolei's pass rush. He was sacked four times, but kept his poise.
"Coach wanted us to show character. We really pulled together," the junior said. "We knew we had the right calls. We just had to execute."
A crowd of about 2,500 saw a defensive stalemate in the first half.
The host 'Canes drove 69 yards to paydirt with their first series. Simione Vehikite, who had a stellar game at linebacker, carried tacklers across the goal line for a 5-yard touchdown with 3:29 to go in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.
Kamehameha managed 127 yards in offense before halftime without scoring. The Warriors finally broke the ice on Kevin Doo's 29-yard field goal with 7:09 left in the third quarter.
They took a 9-6 lead on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Kamano to Pii Minns with 1:18 left in the third.
Keanu Yoshida's sack of Kapolei quarterback Noah Pascua ended the next series. Doo followed with a 28-yard field goal for a 12-6 Kamehameha lead with 9:41 to go in the game.
Pascua raced up the middle 30 yards on a midline option to tie the game at 12 with less than 6 minutes to go, but the 'Canes couldn't take the lead right way. The PAT snap sailed high and Michael Tokunaga made the tackle on third-string kicker Michael Filio.
With 2:21 left, Kaohu McCabe and Tony Tokunaga sacked Vehikite, the punter, after a wide snap on fourth and 8. Kamehameha took over on the 11 and Ho burst off the right side for an 11-yard touchdown run and a 19-12 Kamehameha lead with 2:16 left.
Moments later, Kawika Stant recovered a fumble by Pascua, which led to a 1-yard scoring sneak by Kamano for a 26-12 lead with 1:51 to go.
Kapolei drove for a final touchdown with 9 seconds left. Pascua connected with Kalani Brackenridge from 5 yards out.
