American Savings awards scholarships
American Savings Bank gave $30,000 in scholarships to six students as part of its annual American Scholars Program. Each $5,000 college scholarship is renewable up to three additional years.
The recipients are Dove Atherall of Kapolei High School; Jacob Kahiapo of the Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama Campus; and Alyssa Torres, Campbell High School, all 2008 graduates. Other winners were Xiaomeng Hu, a 2006 graduate of Moanalua High School; Deisha Lei Pico, Molokai High School, 2007; and Melissa Ruan, Moanalua High, 2007.
Imua Family Services received three grants to support its programs for children and their families: $2,500 from the Kent and Polli Smith Fund under the Hawaii Community Foundation to support Camp Imua, a week-long overnight camping experience for 50 children with special needs; $10,000 from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for Camp Imua; more than $46,000 from the Maui United Way to support Imua's Early Childhood Development Program Demonstration project for children ages 3-through-5-years-old, who have developmental delays that are not severe enough to qualify for Department of Education services .
