Iolani glides past KS-Maui
Judging by the way Iolani played, it's hard to imagine that last night was the Raiders' first game of the season.
Kela Marciel tossed three touchdowns and ran for another, all in the first half, as Iolani opened its 2008 campaign in midseason form with a resounding 39-0 victory over Kamehameha-Maui last night in the 45th annual Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium.
The Raiders accounted for 315 total yards by halftime. Marciel finished the first half 12-for-20 for 150 yards and added 57 rushing yards on nine carries as Iolani led 33-0.
Not only was Iolani efficient on offense, scoring on five of its first seven possessions, but it committed just one penalty over the full 48 minutes.
"I wish I could take credit for that, but I don't think I can," Iolani coach Wendell Look said.
As fluid as the Raiders looked to the casual fan, Look said there were plenty of areas where he thought his team could have performed better.
"We weren't clean in the sense that we could have done better with our execution and our crispness," Look said. "We relied too much on improvising on broken-down plays.
"But at least they can make those plays."
A lot of it came from Marciel, who finished 14-for-22 for 161 yards and no interceptions. He also ran for 89 yards on 13 carries.
If there was one concern for Iolani, it came on special teams. The Raiders missed half of their extra-point tries and were susceptible to giving up long kickoff returns.
They'll have to correct that if they expect to beat Leilehua in a battle of state champions next week. The Mules won the Division I state title, while Iolani is coming off its second Division II state championship in the last three years.
"A lot of people are hyping it up, but they're the Division I champions," Look said. "It'll be a big challenge for us, but we've been able to compete against Division I level teams."
After one game, it seems Iolani is up to the task.
The Raiders wasted no time scoring the game's first touchdown last night, as Kellen Imada rumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out to give Iolani a 6-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game.
After forcing a three and out on Kamehameha-Maui's first drive, the Raiders went right back to work on offense. Marciel hooked up with Brandon Ball three times on an 11-play drive, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 13.
The score remained the same at the end of the first quarter as Iolani outgained the Warriors 180 to 4 in the opening period and converted 10 first downs to none for Kamehameha-Maui.
Iolani increased its lead to 20 on its first offensive play of the second quarter. Marciel scrambled out of the pocket and found a wide-open Trevyn Tulonghari down the middle of the field for a 38-yard touchdown pass.

Damien 15, McKinley 12
Brenan Furtado rushed for 100 yards on 10 carries to lead the Monarchs past the Tigers.
Damien cruised to a 15-0 lead before McKinley answered, only to miss the PAT kick, the team's first of two misses for the night. The Tigers' final surge, a touchdown with just under a minute remaining in the game, was not enough.
