BACK TO THE SEACOURTESY HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY
A pahoehoe lava flow from Kilauea Volcano entered the ocean early yesterday at a new site west of Waikupanaha, where lava had been entering the ocean for several months until Wednesday. Scientists believe a decrease in the supply of magma to a storage chamber below the surface of Kilauea's summit last Tuesday interrupted the flow of magma to east-rift-zone vent that was feeding a lava tube to the sea. Magma apparently began moving back into the east rift zone yesterday feeding both the tube system to Waikupanaha and the surface flow shown above.

FRESH LAVACOURTESY HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY
The Kilauea summit continued to produce small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide gas yesterday from the Halemaumau vent. At the east rift eruption site, Puu Oo created elevated amounts of gas, while the Thanksgiving Eve Breakout eruption has resumed with surface flows reported in several places. In this photo taken Friday, a deep view into a vent reveals a fresh-looking lava surface beside hot, glowing rubble.
