Islanders reap National Merit Scholarships
The last group of winners to be announced in 2008 by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. include several from Hawaii who received college-sponsored awards of $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
From 'Iolani School are Signe Chambers, who will attend Washington University in St. Louis; David Jaress, University of Chicago; Reid Y. Kawamoto, University of Southern California; Christina Tamaru, Whitman College; Braxton Sato, Claremont McKenna College; and Alissa Masutani, University of Southern California. From Kaiser High, Dylan Howard, who will attend DePauw University; and from Parker School on the Big Island, Erica Warkus, Arizona State University.
Twin brothers Anthony and Michael Tokunaga, seniors at Kamehameha Schools, attended the 2008 Leadership University at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., in July. The invitational leadership program, sponsored by LeadAmerica, is for academically talented and promising young leaders from across the United States and internationally.
The brothers have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and are members of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. They participate in varsity football and baseball, and volunteer at Kamehameha's Heritage Center.
Shining Stars appears several times a week in the Star-Bulletin
