May's brand kalua pork recalled
The state's largest meat processor issued a recall yesterday of 5,355 pounds of kalua pork distributed in Hawaii after detecting a bacterium that causes listeriosis, a potentially deadly infection.
Palama Meat Co. said it is voluntarily recalling 101 cases of May's brand kalua pork distributed to Sam's Club and Costco in Hawaii and 81 cases of wholesale kalua pork distributed locally, a company release said. The products were not distributed outside Hawaii.
The recall started when federal and company officials found Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in pork products processed at the company's Kapolei plant between last Monday and Thursday.
Listeriosis affects seniors, pregnant women, newborns and adults who have weakened immune systems, causing fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 2,500 people who become ill with the disease in the United States each year, 500 die.
Consumers who have purchased the products are asked to return them for a refund to the point of purchase. Distributors have been advised to remove the products from shelves.
No one has been sickened by the products, the release said.
The following are the recalled products along with their "lot codes":
» May's Hawaii Kalua Brand Pork, package of three 16-ounce bags: freeze by Sept. 17; freeze by Sept. 20.
» May's Kalua Brand Pork, 10-pound case: date code 21708 and production date Aug. 4.
Meeting will cover ailing hospital
Waimea residents on the Big Island are invited to participate in a discussion Saturday about challenges facing the financially troubled North Hawaii Community Hospital.
The hospital's board of directors is holding the meeting from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Waimea YMCA Town Hall with Banyan Alliance facilitators Keith Hunter and Tom Mitrano leading the discussion.
Paul A. Dunne, vice president of fund development and marketing, said in a news release that the board hopes to hear from a broad cross section of people about ways to move the hospital forward.
The hospital has been shaken in recent months by a projected revenue loss of $7 million, a broken alliance with founder Earl T. Bakken, more than 50 layoffs, appointment of a new board president and top officers, and the resignation of Jeff Comer, who became chief executive officer in May.
Ronald J. Vigus was appointed interim CEO by Quorum Health Resources, the management company. Bakken was invited to rejoin the board and participate in the hospital's affairs.
Residents will be asked to share opinions and information at the community meeting and work on recommendations for the board's consideration in small groups.
OHA grant funds center's planning
The cost of planning a new Prince Kuhio Community Center to house native Hawaiian programs in Kapolei has been funded by a $150,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
The center is a project of Hawaii Maoli, a nonprofit organization that administers grants that benefit Hawaiians. It will be built on 24,000 square feet of property leased from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and located mauka of the new DHHL Hale Kalanianaole Administrative Building on Kapolei Parkway.
A learning center, commercial kitchens, meeting pavilion, healing center and office building are to be included in the project. The nonprofit Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, Hawaii Maoli, the Prince Kuhio Federal Credit Union and other community organizations will occupy the offices.
The grant also will cover the design of the building, site work and development of a capital campaign to raise additional funds.
