So celebrate! Several venues around town are planning special events for what's considered the luckiest day in the millennium.
» At 8 Fat Fat 8 Bar and Grille, a celebration includes fortune cookies and a prize drawing that will send one lucky person to Las Vegas. The party will also be a fundraiser for Special Olympics of Hawaii. 8 Fat Fat 8 is located at 1327 S. Beretania St. Call 596-2779.
» The Hawaii band eight0eight will hold an eighth anniversary bash 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Call 294-2112 for details.
» In Chinatown, merchants of the Arts District are holding an entire festival that includes art, crafts, food, music, lion dances, fireworks - and bubbles.
Events begin at 11 a.m., when the art galleries, stores and restaurants start passing out lucky tickets and "As You Wish" bookmarks that allow visitors to write down their wishes and tie them to bamboo thickets around the district. At 8:08 p.m., lions will dance, firecrackers will boom and visitors will blow bubbles to releases their wishes to the heavens.
The schedule for the evening follows:
5:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Wine tastings sponsored by HASR Wine Co., feeding of Chinese lions throughout Chinatown and distribution of bubbles
6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Squirrel Hunters perform on stage at Hotel and Nuuanu streets
7:30 to 7:50 p.m.: The Cherry Blossom Cabaret performs
8 to 9:30 p.m.: Doolin Rakes performs
9:40 to 10 p.m.: The Cherry Blossom Cabaret returns to the stage
Plus: Demonstrations on Hotel Street between Nuuanu and Bethel streets include three lion clubs, Au's Shaolin Arts, Inc., the Asia Arts Organization and Rieta's Chinese Kempo Karate.
