Dylan and Cole Sprouse (Disney's Zack and Cody) will premiere at Sunset on the Beach on Aug. 30 in association with the Maui Writers Conference. The movie doesn't open nationwide until December, but Honolulu gets the first peek because Academy Award-winning screenwriter and producer

Regent Entertainment Chairman and CEO Steve Jarchow hosted a soiree at the Halekulani Tuesday night to thank investors who have helped Hawaii-based Pacific Films (Regent is the primary investor) make movies here for six years. To date they've completed a dozen or so productions, with two more scheduled to shoot on Oahu at the end of the year and in early 2009.
Island investors have contributed $18 million to the effort, with Regent investing another $19 million for movies distributed internationally in theaters and on television. The company's array of commodities have included the submarine thriller "Phantom Below," "Dante's Cove," a series for the gay and lesbian market, and the award-winning "Gods and Monsters."
"Hawaii is not an inexpensive place to make movies," Jarchow said in brief comments to the group. "Act 221 (which offers tax credits) has been very instrumental in allowing us to be functional here." ...

An interesting addition to the weekend lineup is a documentary film that follows presidential candidate Barack Obama as he visits South Africa, a Darfur refugee camp and his father's homeland in Kenya. Obama's narration offers a personal perspective on his journey. The 57-minute movie, directed by Bob Hercules and Keith Walker, screens at 3 p.m. Sunday at the University of Hawaii's Spalding Auditorium.
