Kono advances to round of 32
Stephanie Kono of Honolulu beat Julie Yang of Phoenix 3 and 2 yesterday to advance to the second round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur golf championship at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.
She advances to a round of 32 match today against Jane Chin of Mission Viejo, Calif. The round of 16 will also be contested today.
Ayaka Kaneko, also of Honolulu, fell to Belen Mozo of Spain in 19 holes.
Kansas locks up Self for 10 years
KANSAS CITY, Mo. » Bill Self, the Kansas basketball coach who guided the Jayhawks to their first NCAA championship in 20 years, signed a 10-year, $30 million contract yesterday.
The deal had been in the works since April, when Self's Jayhawks came from nine points down in the final minutes to beat Memphis in a thrilling title game and he subsequently turned down an offer to return to Oklahoma State, his alma mater.
Kansas and Self, 45, said in April he had agreed to the deal while the details were worked on. Kansas also agreed to big raises for his staff as well as improvements on the school's basketball facilities.
» Florida tight end Cornelius Ingram missed practice yesterday with a strained left knee and his status is uncertain.
Florida coach Urban Meyer said he would not know the severity of the injury until the he gets the results of an MRI taken yesterday morning. Meyer said Ingram suffered the injury during one-on-one drills during Tuesday's practice.
Florida hosts Hawaii in its season opener Aug. 30.
