"WEEKEND" SHORT BUT SWEET: Imaginative indie rockers Vampire Weekend - Rostam Batmanglig, left, Chris Tomson, Ezra Koenig and Chris Baio - thrilled an enthusiastic crowd with a tight but somewhat short set July 29 at Pipeline Cafe, featuring songs from their self-titled debut album. The quartet took the stage moments before 9 p.m. with a solid 50 minutes of original rock-meets-African-pop music before Koenig announced that they would play a longer set next time, "when we have more songs," and closed with a five-minute encore.

VALERIE JOSEPH OPENS: Valerie Ragaza-Miao and Joseph Miao had a brief moment for themselves as they co-hosted the grand opening of the Valerie Joseph boutique Friday at Ala Moana Center. The couple and their staff were putting the final pieces in place when the first guests arrived at 5, but the party that followed was well worth the wait. Female fashion mavens made multiple purchases while the men enjoyed Vietnamese pupus and cocktails.

CONGRATULATIONS, LIZ!: Businesswoman/philanthropist Liz Hata Watanabe, right, was assisted by her mother, Dorothy Ganhinhin, and son, Kevin Watanabe, in hosting the grand opening of her new restaurant, Harbor Court Bistro, on Friday. So many well-wishers turned out that the restaurant was jammed solid wall to wall for more than an hour after it started, but it was a great party after that.

SMASH MOUTH SUPERB AT TOWER: Guitarist Leroy and vocalist Steve Harwell were the hard-rocking front line as Smash Mouth played a powerful 90-minute set Saturday at Aloha Tower. Leroy lived up to his pre-show billing as the group's new "rock star" guitarist, and Harwell owned the crowd from the moment he took the stage. Longtime fans were happy to hear "All Star" and Walkin' on the Sun," while the kids in the crowd cheered the band's remake of "I'm a Believer" from "Shrek."
