Wyland extends his brush
"Hands Across the Ocean," an art project by Robert Wyland, was created last month in Chaoyang Park, Beijing, China, to call attention to this year's green Olympics.
Children from more than 110 countries helped Wyland paint canvases totaling 3,200 meters long for the Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival. In a press conference at his Waikiki hotel yesterday, Wyland painted a prototype of his "Higher, Faster, Stronger" statue (above) to be donated to Special Olympics. Wyland plans to create 100 marine-animal sculptures to be placed around the world.

Culinary event canceled on Maui
This year's Taste of Lahaina dining event has been canceled, a victim of the slowdown in the economy.
But the Lahainatown Action Committee vows to bring the popular annual event back in 2009.
Taste of Lahaina and the Best of Island Music Festival had been scheduled for September. A companion event, Maui Chefs Presents, will go on as planned on Sept. 5.
John Brunold, president of the Lahainatown Action Committee, said the group could only support one event and chose to go with the chef event as it is less complicated and less costly to produce.
Maui Chefs Presents, at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, will be themed "Culinary Olympics: The Road to the Ritz," and will feature 12 leading chefs. Singer Raiatea Helm will perform.
Tickets are $140 through Aug. 10; $150 after, to benefit the Maui Community College Culinary Arts Scholarship Program. Call (808) 667-9175 or visit www.visitlahaina.com.
