Cainguitan represents isles at GEAR UP
Jayson Cainguitan, a Waipahu High School junior, represented Hawaii at the annual GEAR UP Youth Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. He was one of 30 students nationwide selected to attend the summit.
The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Inc., awarded two $10,000 scholarships to Julian Yuen of Farrington High School and Chloe Edinger of Baldwin High School, and the $5,000 Karen Uno Outstanding Student Award to Russell Cabral of Kapaa High School. The foundation also gave out another 58 scholarships.
The 2008 General Eric K. and Patricia Shinseki Scholarship was awarded to Kevin Aguilar of Waimea High School; Lauren Esaki of Kapaa High School; and Kendra Kawamura of Kauai High School.
The fund awards $2,000 scholarships annually to graduates of public high schools in Kauai.
Gail Ishimoto, an honors biology teacher at Kamehameha Schools, is one of 250 educators across the country to be named a 2008 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Nathan Nakatsuka, a 2008 Coca-Cola Scholar and a senior from Kamehameha Schools, nominated Ishimoto.
