Writers event offers discounts
For more than a decade, the Maui Writers Conference has provided a chance for established and would-be authors to polish their skills, glean tips from the masters and possibly sell that novel or screenplay. But opportunities like these don't come cheaply. That's why leaders of the Maui Writers Conference - moving to Honolulu this year - decided to offer scholarships to high school and college students, as well as to writers struggling financially (doesn't that include everyone except J.K. Rowling?).
To obtain a 50 percent reduction in the conference registration fee, students should submit a three- to five-page writing sample and proof of their enrollment in a qualified school. Those claiming financial hardship need to include an explanation of their fiscal situation. Visit www.mauiwriters.com or call 879-0061.
The conference will take place Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 at the Ala Moana Hotel and Hawai'i Convention Center. More than 100 workshops, lectures, consultations and social gatherings will be available to attendees. Fields of focus include fiction and nonfiction, screenwriting, children's and young adult books, journalism, magazine writing, food and cookbook writing, and poetry.
Group seeks help for abused kids
The Children's Alliance of Hawaii is collecting donations of school supplies for sexually abused children.
Items such as backpacks, pens, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, Crayola broad-line markers, Fiskars scissors, notebooks, marble composition books, folder paper, two-pocket folders, 4-ounce bottles of glue and glue sticks are needed. Cash donations are also welcome.
The alliance distributed 175 backpacks to needy children last year.
