Hula halau from Japan and Hawaii participated yesterday in the seventh annual Hula Ho'olauna Aloha festival at the Waikiki Shell. Akiko Onchi from Halau Kawaianuhea was rimmed in sunlight as she danced. The festival, created in 2002, celebrates Japan's love for hula in its birthplace while bridging Hawaiian and Japanese cultures through dance and friendship. Performances were judged by many of Hawaii's top kumu hula, including Sonny Ching, Kealoha Kalama, Leimomi Ho, Keala Ching, Nawahine Kuraoka, Iwalani Kalima and Les Pang.

The Shinto ritual of renewal, Chinowa Kuguri, was performed Saturday at the Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Dazaifu Tenmangu temple in Kalihi. Ken and Kumiko Saiki passed through the "chinowa," a ring made of ti leaves.
