‘Hidden Wounds’ gets top award

A three-part Star-Bulletin series that shed light on the effects of trauma and brain injuries on soldiers returning from war won the top print public service award in the annual Excellence in Journalism Awards on Friday night.

The award for reporter Susan Essoyan's "Hidden Wounds" stories was one of nine first-place finishes for the Star-Bulletin. The Honolulu Advertiser took home 14 first-place awards in the annual competition sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists.

KHNL's Leland Kim and Joseph Aikala won the television public service award for their reporting on "Hawaii's Medical Crisis."

The Star-Bulletin's other awards were for: spot news reporting, general news/enterprise reporting, news page design, feature page design, online general news reporting, column writing/news, sports reporting, sports photography, and special section.

"The drowning of Hawaii" designed by Mike Rovner and Charlene Robinson, won best News Page Design.

The Star-Bulletin also took home12 finalist honors, while the Advertiser won 14 finalist awards.

The two Honolulu dailies split the Internet category prizes, with the Advertiser taking the top online spot news award and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin winning the online general news prize.

The judges said Star-Bulletin reporter Craig Gima's piece "Burma Stories & Videos," winner of the online general news reporting category, was "tops among extraordinarily strong competition."

Christine Cabalo of Hawaii Marine was a big individual winner with three first-place awards and seven finalist accolades in the non-daily newspaper division. She swept the general news/enterprise reporting and community reporting categories and also won first place for page design.

Hawaii Marine is published by MidWeek, a sister publication of the Star-Bulletin.

Honolulu Magazine had four first place finishes.

Hawaii Public Radio took first-place for radio feature reporting.

In the television division, KITV scooped up the most awards with four. KGMB picked up three, KHNL took home two, and KHON had one first-place award.

Beverly Keever, retiring University of Hawaii professor and teacher of many of the state's journalists, was presented with a lifetime achievement award during Friday night's ceremonies.
