Ishii qualifies for Senior Open
David Ishii won the first hole of a playoff to win yesterday's U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifier at Honolulu Country Club.
Ishii and Masahiro Tokunaga of Japan ended the round at even-par 72 with Ishii winning the playoff to earn a spot in the Senior Open, to be held July 31-Aug. 3 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado. Tokunaga will be the first alternate. Leland Lindsay shot 73 and won a playoff with Douglas Williams for the second alternate spot.
Silver medal for Jammers 17s
The Jammers 17s team earned a silver medal yesterday at the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships in Dallas.
The Jammers lost to Impact VBC of Tennessee 25-13, 25-6 in the championship match of the 17s national division. Named to the all-tournament team from Hawaii were Kelly Chang, Haililani Pokipala and Pihanakealoha Kea.
It was the third silver medal of the competition for a Hawaii team. This year's tournament includes 9,500 athletes from 788 teams competing for 19 titles in age divisions ranging from 12s to 18s.
Hawaii players contribute to U.S. win
The U.S. Junior Men's National Team, with two players from Hawaii in the starting lineup, turned things around yesterday and defeated the Dominican Republic 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 at the 2008 NORCECA Continental Men's Junior Championship in San Salvador, El Salvador.
One day after losing to Canada in three sets, the U.S. improved to 1-1. Outside hitter Tri Bourne (AOP '07) had four kills and an ace, and Erik Shoji (Punahou '08) played the entire match at libero.
Also on the roster from Hawaii is Brad Lawson (Iolani '08), who sprained his ankle in Monday's loss to Canada and did not play yesterday. The U.S. plays Puerto Rico today.
