Sacred Hearts student wins essay contest
Angela Yuen of Sacred Hearts Academy won the 2008 Values for Life state high school essay contest, sponsored by the Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series, held recently at the University of Hawaii.
Carli Owan of Kamehameha Schools Maui took second place, and
Lucia Tosatto of Sacred Hearts, third. Cash prizes were awarded and charitable donations were made in the students' names.
Winners of AlohaCare's sixth annual statewide art contest for children, ages 4-12, include: Division 1 (ages 4-5), first place: Jena Mukai of Wailuku; second: Jahi Alfiler-Malani, Honokaa, Hawaii; third: Jennifer Kojima, Ewa Beach. Division 2 (ages 6-7), first: Kiliona Keohuloa, Kahului, Maui; second: Chryssa Chiu, Honolulu; third: Koa Markell, Honolulu. Division 3 (ages 8-9), first: Eleanor Yuan, Honolulu; Kailey Kurashige, Mililani; third: Dante Hirata-Epstein, Honolulu. Division 4 (ages 10-12), first, Tyler Okunami, Mililani; second, Hannah Broderick, Honolulu; third: Rebekah Bowman, Kula, Maui.
The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation received $25,000 from the Longs Benefit Golf Classic, held in May. The grant will be used to purchase a specially equipped van to transport patients.
