Opening-night menu feeds off show’s spirit
Richard O'Brien's "Rocky Horror Show," the biggest and baddest rock 'n' roll musical in the universe, will transform Manoa Valley Theatre into Frank N. Furter's castle of mad science and mass seduction beginning tonight.

The "Rocky Horror Show" premiered in London in 1973, and on Broadway in 1975. Various revivals and a 1975 motion picture, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," have vaulted it to the status of cult favorite.
Complete with sass from the audience (many dressed as their favorite characters), cascading toilet paper and an array of other audience-participation props, this deliberately kitschy rock 'n' roll sci-fi gothic is always fun.
Here are a few "theme" recipes that will be featured at the opening-night reception, shared by MVT volunteers.
Rocky's Horror BBQ Sauce
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1/3 cup sweet pickles, chopped
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
In small saucepan, combine all ingredients; heat to boil. Simmer gently 5 minutes. Use as dip with heated small, smoky sausages (Frank N. Furters). Makes 1-1/2 to 2 cups
Approximate nutritional analysis, per 2-tablespoon serving: 25 calories, no fat or cholesterol, 120 mg sodium, 6 g carbohydrate, 4 g sugar, no fiber or protein.
Basic Rice Muffins
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1 cup cold cooked rice
2 tablespoons melted shortening
Fruit and chopped nuts to taste, optional
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease and flour a muffin pan or line with muffin cups.
Mix all dry ingredients until evenly blended.
In large bowl, beat egg; add milk and cooked rice. Stir in melted shortening, and immediately add flour mixture. Stir until all is just dampened, plus 3 or 4 more strokes, but don't make the batter smooth.
Add fruit and nuts, if desired. Spoon into prepared muffin pan, filling each cup about 2/3 full. Bake 20 minutes or until done. Makes 10 to 12 muffins. (Or can use smaller muffin tins and make 24.)
Approximate nutritional analysis, per serving (based on 10 muffins): 120 calories, 5 g total fat, 2 g saturated fat, 25 mg cholesterol, 400 mg sodium, 16 g carbohydrate, no fiber, 2 g sugar, 3 g protein.
Note: Vary the flavor by adding spices, nuts, fruit, cheese, etc. Be careful not to add anything with too much liquid
For "Magenta Sweet Muffins": Add to the basic recipe 1/4 cup chopped dried cherries, 1/4 cup chopped prunes, 3 packets artificial sweetener (such as Splenda or Equal), 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon all spice.
Approximate nutritional analysis, per serving (based on 10 muffins): 140 calories, 5 g total fat, 2 g saturated fat, 25 mg cholesterol, 400 mg sodium, 22 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber, 6 g sugar, 3 g protein.
Riff Raff Party Mix
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
2 teaspoons seasoned salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon curry powder
4-1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2-2/3 cup corn Chex cereal
2-2/3 cup wheat Chex cereal
2-2/3 cup rice Chex cereal
1 cup mixed nuts
2 cups thin pretzel sticks
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Place butter In 15-by-10-inch baking pan; place pan in oven to melt butter.
Add salt, garlic powder, curry powder and Worcestershire sauce; mix well.
Add cereal and nuts and toss to coat evenly. Bake 45 minutes, stirring every 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and add pretzels.
