Solomon Espina smiled yesterday while giving his 6-year-old granddaughter Madison an after-breakfast chocolate treat during the annual Hawaii Kai Lions Club Father’s Day pancake breakfast at Kaiser High School’s cafeteria. Incoming President Keith Katsuda said money raised through the event will fund Lions Club community volunteer projects such as the annual Hawaii Kai Christmas Parade and the Hawaii Kai Library.

LURING AN ARTIST

Eight-year-old Ryan Su was shown the proper technique of "gyotaku" yesterday during a demonstration with artist Naoki Hayashi at Nohea Galleries at Ward Warehouse. Hayashi is an avid diver and fisherman. Each of his gyotaku is a window into the underwater world he sees when diving in Hawaii waters. In each gyotaku print, he replicates a scene from one of his many dives. His art features fish in true-life color and in compositions that reflect how they are found in nature.
