‘South Pacific’ is awash in Tonys, but not for Sayre

NEW YORK » Broadway's lavish production of "South Pacific" picked up seven prizes - more than any other show - at the Tony Awards last night.

Those awards didn't include a Tony for Hawaii's Loretta Ables Sayre, who was nominated as featured actress in a musical for her role as Bloody Mary. That prize - equivalent to a supporting actress award - went instead to Laura Benanti for "Gypsy."

"South Pacific" was named best musical revival, and leading man Paulo Szot won the trophy for best actor in a musical. The play also collected four design awards: sets, costumes, lighting and sound.

Director Bartlett Sher noted the work of the show's creators, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, original director Joshua Logan and James Michener, who wrote the novel. "They were kind of incredible men, because they seem to teach me particularly that in a way I wasn't only an artist, but I was also a citizen."

Pinup-worthy pet photos are sought for calendar

Is your pet really good-looking, or perhaps the cutest little thing on the planet? Why not share its image, for a good cause?

The Hawaiian Humane Society is seeking entries for its "Pets in Paradise" 2009 calendar. A panel of judges will choose 13 pinups for the calendar. All other photos submitted will be used in a collage inside the calendar.

Submissions are due by June 30. High-resolution photos can be uploaded through the society's Web site, www.hawaiihumane.org.

Or send photo prints - they must be horizontal, 4 by 6 inches and in color - to the society at 2700 Waialae Ave., Honolulu 96826. Polaroids, photos printed on plain paper or that don't meet reproduction standards will not be accepted. An entry form can be downloaded at the same Web site.

Each submission must include a $15 nonrefundable donation per image.

Entry fees and calendar sales support the Humane Society. Pre-orders for the calendars, at $10, plus $2.50 postage, are being taken at the Web site. Call 946-2187. - Star-Bulletin
