HILO » The Hawaii Paroling Authority has set 100 years as the minimum sentence for Jeffrey Santos Jr., who pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend, Daysha Aiona Aka, in November 2006 by shooting her in the head.
The shooting took place with the couple's 2-year-old son watching, a police report said.
Santos placed Aiona Aka's body in her car and set it on fire on a road in the Panaewa Forest south of Hilo. The child was unhurt.
Police documents said Santos was in a relationship with Aiona Aka for about six years, and much of that time he abused her. She obtained a restraining order to keep him away, but her son was in Santos' care just before the shooting, and she went to see him to pick up the child.
Santos, 24, told his attorney, Brian De Lima, that he did not want a trial, and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and arson. He was sentenced to a maximum of life with possibility parole for the murder and 20 years for the arson.
