Writer-director Stewart Wade and producer Antonio Brown will also do a post-screening Q&A when "Tru Loved" shows Sunday night at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre, preceded at 5 p.m. by the locally made short "Get Me Bodied." Brent Anbe's music video features local show-queen diva Keisha and friends working it to Beyonce's bumpin' party track.
With the festival starting Thursday night, the remainder of the schedule looks like this (with synopses for highlight films):
Friday
» 2 p.m. -- "XXY": Argentina's submission for consideration for this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar, it's about Alex, an intersex teenager (hence the title), who becomes attracted to Alvaro, who is visiting Alex's home with his parents. The 15-year-old Alex is beginning to explore her sexuality, and her attraction to Alvaro adds another level of complexity to her personal search for identity. New York Times' critic Manohla Dargis calls this a "delicate (and) emotionally potent" film. (Preceded by the short "Thorn in Your Side.")
