Hannemann presents Sew a Lei awards
Mayor Mufi Hannemann presented award certificates to first-place winners of the Sew a Lei for Memorial Day Poster Contest. They are
Rafael Sifuentes of Kapaa Elementary School,
Jeong Eun Choi of Stevenson Middle School, and
Chanel Hebaru of Mililani High School.
First-place winners received two-night stays for up to four people at the Queen Kapiolani or Ocean Resort Hotels, and other prizes. All of the winning and honorable-mention posters will be exhibited on the third floor of Honolulu Hale through May 29.
Other winners in the kindergarten through 4th grade division include Brylyn Aiwohi of Kapaa Elementary, second place; and Romulo Sayson, Jr., Kalihi Waena Elementary School, third place. In the 5th through 8th grade division: Dustin Borromeo of Kalakaua Middle School, second place; Melissa Tom, Stevenson Middle School, third place. In the 9th through 12th grade: Brandee Rodrigues of Roosevelt High School, second place; Loraine Doliente, Farrington High School, third place.
Brian Yannutz, a sophomore majoring in marine science, was awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hollings Scholarship. Yannutz will receive up to $8,000 for full-time study for two years , and a summer stipend-supported internship ($650/week) at a NOAA facility.
