Kaufman sets UH high jump mark
Hawaii two-sport athlete Amber Kaufman won the high jump yesterday with a school-record effort of 6-feet, 1/2 -inches during the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho.
Kaufman edged teammate Emily Sheppard by three-quarters of an inch as the Rainbow Wahine finished a distant sixth with 74.5 points to four-time champion Louisiana Tech with 145 points. Idaho was second with 122, with Fresno State, Utah State and Nevada rounding out the top five.
"For Amber, what an amazing effort," Rainbow Wahine coach Carmyn James said in a news release. "She'll be able to get to nationals with that mark."
The Wahine will next compete at the NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31 in Northridge, Calif. UH qualified a school-record 10 athletes to the meet.
TJ Barron takes Macy's E-Series
TJ Barron picked up a win in the ASP Hawaii presents the Macy's E-Series Event No. 1 surf contest at Maili Point yesterday.
Barron linked a tail slide, snap and two roundhouse cutbacks on his winning wave of the 30-minute final.
With the victory in the 1-Star World Qualifying Series event, Barron pocketed $2,500 and earned 250 WQS points. He was followed closely by Joel Centeio of Makakilo, who picked up $1,000 and 219 points. Coming in third was North Shore's Flynn Novak, who went home with $800 and 188 points.
Rainbow basketball camps set for June
The Rainbows boys and girls basketball camps will be split into two sessions.
Session I will be June 6 to 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Session II will be June 9-12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost for Session I is $150 per participant and cost for Session II is $175.
To attend both sessions the cost is $300. Both camps are open to children ages 5 through 17. Each camp features Hawaii coaches and student-athletes as instructors. The camps will take place at the Stan Sheriff Center as well as practice gyms 1 and 2, and Klum Gym.

Nakama, Berwick, Stanton at QB Club
Honolulu Advertiser sports reporter Wes Nakama, Honolulu Cricket Club captain Mark Berwick and University of Hawaii art professor Joe Stanton will be featured at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club's luncheon.
Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the noon program.
