Vets can qualify for diabetes disability compensation
How does a veteran qualify for Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation for diabetes?
Answer: To qualify for VA disability compensation, most veterans must have a diagnosis of diabetes and evidence that it began or was aggravated during active duty or within one year of release from duty. In 2001, veterans who served in Vietnam and later developed adult-onset (Type 2) diabetes became eligible for disability compensation on a presumption that the condition is connected to their military service. They do not have to present evidence that their diabetes began during or shortly after military service. This presumptive policy is an outgrowth of research into the potential effects of Agent Orange. More information on diabetes can be found at http://www1.va.gov/ diabetes. If you need information on obtaining disability compensation for this disease, contact the VA Reg at (800) 827-1000.
Q: I plan to relocate overseas this summer and was wondering what the VA will pay for if I need medical treatment.
A: The VA will pay for medical services for the treatment of service-connected disabilities and related conditions for veterans abroad. Services in most foreign countries must be authorized by the Foreign Medical Program Office, P.O. Box 65021, Denver, CO 80206-9021. Their telephone number is (303) 331-7590. Services provided in Canada are under the jurisdiction of the VA Center in White River Junction, VT 05009-0001, and the Philippines are under the jurisdiction of the USVA Office, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City 1300, M.M., or VA Outpatient Clinic, Regional Office, FPO AP 96575. Beneficiaries residing in foreign countries should contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate for information and claims assistance. In Canada, veterans should contact an office of Veterans Affairs Canada.
