Eugenio fired a four-hitter as Sacred Hearts blanked Kailua 4-0 last night in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I State Softball Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Sacred Hearts (10-5) will face No. 4 seed Waiakea in today's quarterfinal game at 1 p.m.
The Lancers got a superb effort from Eugenio, a left-handed junior. She struck out six and walked none, and her defense -- led by shortstop Laura Abellanida -- committed only one error on a skinned infield that had a few tricky spots all day.
Sacred Hearts practices at Crane Park, a Parks and Recreation facility. Kailua, familiar with its smooth, soft infield on campus, never seemed comfortable with the UH diamond.
Kailua (13-11) got a strong performance from Krista Dumandan -- she allowed just one earned run, fanned seven and walked one -- but her defense committed five errors. Those miscues allowed for three unearned runs.
"It's been awhile since both teams played. I think it was more the jitters and bad breaks," Sacred Hearts coach Wade Okamura said.
There was no question about Eugenio, of course. Her fastball was on point and her curveball baffled Kailua's normally strong hitting attack.
"After I threw two (drop) pitches, I knew it wasn't going to be one of the working pitches for the day," Eugenio said.
Still, Kailua got runners in scoring position in only two innings -- the fourth and the fifth. Nobody got past second against her.
The Lancers, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runners-up, scored twice in the fourth to break a scoreless duel. Keicha Brunn's infield pop fell untouched near second base, allowing Eugenio to score from third for the first run. Moments later, a wild pitch by Dumandan bounced short of home plate and soared 15 feet, allowing Brunn to score SHA's second run.
In the fifth, Sydney "Taimane" Vegas' perfectly placed bunt past the mound found a wide-open space at shortstop, and Shelby Lono scored all the way from second base to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead. After Brunn socked a single to left, Chelsea Kamai scored to give their team a four-run cushion.
Sacred Hearts, the 2007 Division II state champion, had a history of falling to Kailua in the postseason.
"The key is you don't want to fall behind in the count against them," Okamura said. "The experience of playing here before, even in D-II, really helped us prepare for this. It's the first time we beat Kailua in states."

Senior Breanne Patton fired a four-hit shutout and drove in the only run as the Sabers (21-7) advanced by edging the Knights. Patton struck out seven and outdueled Castle ace Chandelle Dacosin.
The Sabers' lone run came in the third when Loreen Egdamin singled to center, stole second and came home on Patton's single to left. Campbell will play No. 3 seed Baldwin (17-4) today at 5 p.m. Castle (21-16) will play Waipahu in a consolation game today at 11 a.m.
The Knights threatened to tie the score in the top of the seventh. Kaitlynn Wills singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and headed to third on a groundout by Kelsea Berinobis. The throw from first to third sailed high, but Campbell left fielder Amber Kaulia covered on the play. Brooke-Lee Ka'ulula'au then lined out to second, ending the game.

Britni Ronolo's single in the top of the seventh inning brought home the go-ahead run as Na Menehune (22-8) hung on for a narrow win over the Marauders. Before Ronolo stepped to the plate, Waipahu intentionally walked Sarah Robinson to load the bases. Ronolo then lined a single to center, scoring Michelle Acosta from third.
"It was a fastball inside a little bit," said Ronolo, who was 0-for-3 before her clutch hit. "I felt like a beast."
Robinson struck out six and allowed just two hits for the win. Elsa Apo, who scattered 12 hits, took the loss for Waipahu (9-16).

Kimberly Okaneku's sacrifice fly brought Hillary Uekawa home with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Spartans rallied to victory. Uekawa led off the inning with a single, moved to second when Ariel Silva's bunt was mishandled, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Guillermo.
Okaneku then sent a 2-0 pitch to short right field, and Uekawa beat the throw home.
Uekawa's father, coach John Uekawa, cautioned her from the third-base box. "He told me, 'It's a tricky one. The right fielder's running in.' But I just knew I could make it," she said.
Silva went the distance for the win. Uekawa went 3-for-4, including RBI singles in the third and fourth innings. Shay Shibata was 2-for-4, including a run-scoring triple in the third and a two-run single in the fourth that tied the score at 4-all.
The Lady Lunas trailed 6-5 entering the top of the seventh, but wild pitches by Silva allowed Kimberlee Shimizu to score the tying run. On the same play, Annastaceya Arcangel tried to score when the throw went to second base, but she was thrown out by Shibata, the shortstop.
