Out Hunger drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Some 576,533 pounds of food were collected, compared with 310,000 last year. "It was incredible," said Lynn Ching, vice president of Aloha United Way.
Ching said although the totals are not final, the amount of donations has already set a new record for the association's drive.
She said the association has been actively assisting food banks in each county for the past 16 years.
Ching said she thought the increase was due to the blue plastic bags that were left at households statewide and also fliers given to schoolchildren as a reminder about the food drive.
She said the food was generally of a higher quality and included items that contained protein.
